What is eTherapy?
eTherapy is the delivery of mental health services and support through digital platforms. Various mediums of delivery can be used to provide eTherapy services to clients such as phone or video calls, email, instant chat, or text. Though the concept of eTherapy has been around for many years, the industry is on the brink of rapid expansion. Online therapy is a more general term that can be used to encompass any sort of mental health help or advice that is obtained on the Internet, eTherapy included. Online counselling or therapy could include self help websites, medical advice pages, discussion boards, as well as the eTherapy methods mentioned. eTherapy is a more specific term as it refers to direct interaction between a clinician and client in a therapeutic setting. As such, self help websites and online support group (not facilitated) would not count as eTherapy. As eTherapy is still a relatively new approach, there are many terms that are used to describe it such as cybercounselling, internet therapy, online psychotherapy, virtual counselling and many more. Though there is not one agreed upon term or definition, distinguishing eTherapy as requiring direct therapist-client interaction is a simple way to conceptualize all of these different terms.
